Twyfelfontein si trova in una zona desolata a nordest della Namibia. Il paesaggio e' semidesertico, cosparso di colline rocciosee sabbia. La temperatura e' sempre ai massimi livelli e qui soffia un vento secco proveniente dal deserto del Namib. Praticamente e' come aver costantemente un'ascigacapelli puntato dritto in faccia.
Lungo la strada mi sono fermato a visitare la foresta pietrificata dove sono stati rinvenuti enormi tronchi d'albero vecchi di milioni di anni che, con la pressione che la sabbia ha esercitato su di loro in tutto questo tempo, si sono letteralmente pietrificati.
A Twyfelfontein c'e' la piu' estesa galleria di pitture rupestri di tutta l'Africa.
Qui i disegni sono stati effettuati circa 6.000 anni fa incidendo la superficie delle roccie. Il disegno piu' famoso e' l'"Uomo leone" che rappresenta un leone con una mano umana all'estremita' della lunga coda. Da questo si deduce che gli uomini che hanno fatto questi disegni credessero che, una volta morti, si reincarnassero in qualche altro animale.

Twyfelfontein is in a bare region in the northwest of Namibia. The landscape is almost like a desert, with rocky hills and sand. The climate is always very hot here, with a dry wind blowing from the Namib desert. It’s like having a hair drier constantly pointed to your face.
Along the road I stopped to visit the ‘stone forest’, where million-year old huge tree trunks have become like stones, due to the compression of the sand throughout the centuries.
At Twyfelfontein there’s the longest rock paintings gallery of all Africa.
The paintings here date back to 6000 years ago, and were created by carving the rock surface. The most famous is ‘The Lion-man’, showing a lion with a human hand at the end of its long tail.
